The Mulligan Foundation

The Mulligan Foundation is a non-profit foundation that is building a unified, life-stage Mental Health & Transition Pipeline for athletes—starting in youth and continuing through college, professional play, and life after sport.

What that looks like:

  • Normalize mental fitness: short, practice-ready drills and coach/parent workshops so mental skills are as routine as swing work.
  • Real access to care: a confidential navigation line with warm handoffs to vetted clinicians and clear crisis protocols.
  • On-site support: “Beyond the Game” stations at events (youth, junior, college, pro) with quick consults and QR access to resources.
  • Peer mentors & family tools: trained peers, alumni support, and simple guides for parents.
  • Career pathways: purpose planning

It's About Finding a Better Way

“ Athletes who are not prepared for what’s next are failed by their teams, coaches, and organizations, and the consequences are steep. Retired athletes face extreme depression and anxiety and often resort to heavy substance abuse and overspending. It’s estimated that 78% of professional athletes go broke after 3 years of retirement, and 45% suffer from anxiety and depression after transitioning. Families and entire communities suffer the fallout.”

Mental Health Awareness has never received more attention, and funding for initiatives has never been higher, yet the suicide rate  is setting record numbers.  Something is broken in the delivery of the message.  It's time to change how we look at helping athletes.

Our Impact

We are looking to help change the stigma behind working on your own mental health both in our professional and junior athletes.

Why We Started

After nearly 20 years of playing professional golf, I stepped away from competition in 2019.  I loved being a present dad and being home with my wife and two kids. But over time, I began to sense something was deeply wrong. The “Steve” I had spent my whole life becoming seemed to disappear. I felt depressed, unmotivated, and I turned to alcohol to numb the pain. I grew to hate myself, and for the first time, I truly understood what it meant to be “suffering in silence.”

It wasn’t until I finally sought treatment that I began to feel like myself again. During that process, I realized how hard it was to reach out to traditional therapists or hotlines. Instead, I found myself looking for peers — other athletes who had walked through the same struggles and come out the other side. Hearing from people who truly “understood” was what I needed most. And I know I’m not alone. That’s how many athletes are wired.

There has to be a better way forward. That’s why we built this initiative — to not only support current athletes who are struggling, but to prepare junior and collegiate athletes for what may come if they pursue professional sports. Stress and pressure are inevitable, but we can equip them with better tools to handle it.

We want to be part of the change. To be difference makers. To save lives, protect identities, and help athletes rediscover purpose beyond the game.
